Panel Discussion by HUMAN RIGHTS CELL

The Human Rights Cell had organized a Panel Discussion at Symbiosis Law School - Nagpur on the theme of “Human Rights in the Digital Age: Defining a New Paradigm.” The discussion began at 3.45 pm with Ms. Yukta Nidhi one of the student members of the Human Rights Cell introducing the concept note and highlighting of the main theme of the discussion. Mr. Nitin Pathak another student members of the Cell welcomed Advocate Smita Sarode Singalkar one of the speakers of the panel discussion by highlighting her achievements in the legal filed and her contribution to human rights education. Mr. Prashant Shukla a student member of the Cell welcomed Dr. Advocate Mahendra Bhaskar Limaye, who is an expert in human rights and digital information.

The panel discussion was moderated by Dr. Salu Dsouza, Assistant Professor and Faculty in charge of Human Rights Cell. Dr. Mahendra Limaye began his discussion by highlighting Fundamental Rights in Indian Constitution and their Enforcement in Digital Era. He also mentioned how social media collects users’ data without their knowledge. He explained how human rights is abused over the dark and deep net in the digital world and cautioned the law students to be aware of various ill effects of social media.

Advocate Smita Singalkar began her discussion by defining women rights in the digital age, its challenges and responses. Sharing her rich experience with various movements and institutions in the service of women, she focused on the specific problems faced by women in the digital world and the need to address these challenges. She highlighted many cases, which she had encountered during her legal practice regarding fake accounts, online matrimonial frauds, how women writers online abused by readers and the violation of their rights in the digital age. She also sensitized the students on such contemporary movements like the “#MeToo” campaign and its potentials and also cautioning them on the judicious use of the potentials offered by the Digital World.

The law students who were in the audience raised few valid questions to which they received appropriate answers from these two experts. The faculty members and the students of law found the discussion useful and gained much knowledge from this discussion. Finally, Ms. Sanchita Arora, a student member of the Human Rights Cell presented the vote of thanks.
