In commemoration of the 79th Independence Day of India, the Symbiosis Centre for Constitutional Law Studies (SCCLS) at Symbiosis Law School, Nagpur, organised an engaging Essay Writing Competition on the theme, “Independence and the Constitution of India: A National Journey of Freedom and Responsibility.” The event was held on 14th August 2025, from 3 PM, and saw enthusiastic participation from students, celebrating the spirit of patriotism and constitutional values.
Independence Day, observed annually on 15th August, marks a defining moment in Indian history—the end of British colonial rule in 1947. It is a day of immense national pride and reflection, symbolising the triumph of resilience, unity, and the sacrifices of countless freedom fighters who laid down their lives for the country’s liberation. More than just a celebration of freedom, Independence Day also reminds us of the responsibilities that come with it—especially in upholding the values enshrined in the Constitution of India.
The competition served as a platform for students to reflect on India’s transformation from colonial rule to a constitutional democracy and to critically engage with the enduring values of the Constitution. It encouraged participants to explore ideals such as justice, liberty, equality, and fraternity, while examining the responsibilities that accompany freedom in a democratic society.
A total of 28 students from the BA/BBALLB program participated in the competition, reflecting the enthusiasm and commitment of the academic community to the theme.
The event began with instructions and the distribution of answer scripts by Prof. Parth Sharma, Faculty In-charge, Symbiosis Centre for Constitutional Law Studies ensuring participants understood the format of the competition. The writing session commenced at 3:05 PM and continued for one hour, during which students articulated their perspectives on the Constitution as both a legacy of the freedom struggle and a living document guiding modern governance.
The competition showcased diverse perspectives, with students highlighting the Constitution’s role in safeguarding democratic ideals and bridging historical struggles with contemporary challenges. The event not only deepened constitutional awareness but also enhanced students’ analytical, legal reasoning, and academic writing skills.
The event was smoothly coordinated by the dedicated organising team of SCCLS student members, along with the student coordinators for the competition Ms. Meenakshi Kumari and Ms. Navya Sharma. Their hard work and planning ensured the competition was conducted seamlessly.
The success of the competition was further reinforced by the guidance and encouragement of Dr. Sukhvinder Singh Dari, Director, Symbiosis Law School, Nagpur, and Dr. Deepti Khubalkar, Deputy Director, Symbiosis Law School, Nagpur, whose leadership ensured the event’s effectiveness. Appreciation is extended to the IT Department for providing the necessary technical support, and to the Exam Department for assisting with stationery, ensuring the smooth functioning of the event.
By fostering constitutional literacy and civic responsibility, the competition aligned with SDG 16: Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions. It inspired students to appreciate the Constitution not merely as a legal text but as a dynamic framework for democratic governance and nation-building. The Essay Writing Competition was a resounding success, leaving a lasting impact on students and strengthening their commitment to uphold constitutional values and democratic ethics.
This Essay Writing Competition promotes peace, justice, and strong institutions (SDG 16), ensures inclusive and quality education by encouraging civic learning (SDG 4), and fosters awareness to reduce inequalities in society (SDG 10). It empowers participants to reflect on India’s constitutional journey through the lens of freedom, rights, and responsibilities.
